About SLAPPs Monitor

A digital platform to track, document, and analyse strategic lawsuits against public participation in Nigeria.

What are SLAPPs?

Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) are abusive legal actions designed to silence journalists, activists, and citizens through intimidation, frivolous lawsuits, or misuse of criminal laws.

🇳🇬

Why Nigeria?

Nigeria currently has no centralised, real-time system to capture and analyse patterns of legal harassment against civic actors. This monitor fills that gap.

Our Mission

The SLAPPs Monitor is developed by Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA) as part of the "Defend the Defenders: Enhancing Action Against Suppressive Laws and Lawsuits in Nigeria" project, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

The platform serves as a data repository for verified cases, a reporting tool for victims and observers, and an analysis and advocacy tool for civic space protection across Nigeria's 36 states and FCT.
